چکیده
Navigation Among Movable Obstacles Mike Stilman Robots would be much more useful if they could move obstacles out of the way. Traditional motion planning searches for collision free paths from a start to a goal. However, real world search and rescue, construction, home and nursing home domains contain debris, materials clutter, doors and objects that need to be moved by the robot. Theoretically, one can represent all possible interactions between the robot and movable objects as a huge search. We present methods that simplify the problem and make Navigation Among Movable Obstacles (NAMO) a practical challenge that can be addressed with current computers. This thesis gives a full development cycle from motion planning to implementation on a humanoid robot. First, we devise a state space decomposition strategy that reasons about free space connectivity to select objects and identify helpful displacements. Second, we present controls for balance and manipulation that allow the robot to move objects with previously unknown dynamics. Finally, we combine these results in a complete system that recognizes environment objects and executes Navigation Among Movable Obstacles. Our continued work in NAMO planning has focused on three topics: reasoning about object interaction, three dimensional manipulation and interaction with constrained objects. This thesis presents the computational and theoretical challenges that arise from these elaborations of the NAMO domain. In each case we introduce extensions to our algorithms that respond to the challenge and evaluate their performance in simulation. All the methods presented in this thesis not only solve previously unsolved problems but also operate efficiently, giving real-time results that can be used during online operation.

In this paper, we review the recent publication by Stilman and Kuffner titled “Navigation Among Movable Obstacles: Realtime Reasoning in Complex Environments”. They propose a solution to the problem of navigation in cluttered environments where the robot has the ability to move obstacles to clear previously blocked paths. This problem is particularly challenging because the planner must include...
متن کاملPlanning Among Movable Obstacles with Artificial Constraints
In this paper we present artificial constraints as a method for guiding heuristic search in the computationally challenging domain of motion planning among movable obstacles. The robot is permitted to manipulate unspecified obstacles in order to create space for a path. A plan is an ordered sequence of paths for robot motion and object manipulation. We show that under monotone assumptions, anti...
متن کاملHierarchical Decision Theoretic Planning for Navigation Among Movable Obstacles
In this paper we present the first decision theoretic planner for the problem of Navigation Among Movable Obstacles (NAMO). While efficient planners for NAMO exist, they suffer in practice from the inherent uncertainties in both perception and control on real robots. Generalizing the ideas of these planners to the nondeterministic case has proven difficult, due to the sensitivity of MDP methods...
متن کاملAn Effective Framework for Path Planning Amidst Movable Obstacles
This paper addresses the problem of navigating an autonomous moving entity in an environment with both stationary and movable obstacles. If a movable obstacle blocks the path of the entity attempting to reach its goal configuration, the entity is allowed to alter the placement of the obstacle by manipulation (e.g. pushing or pulling), to clear its path. This paper presents a probabilistically c...
متن کاملPath Planning among Movable Obstacles: A Probabilistically Complete Approach
In this paper we study the problem of path planning among movable obstacles, in which a robot is allowed to move the obstacles if they block the robot’s way from a start to a goal position. We make the observation that we can decouple the computations of the robot motions and the obstacle movements, and present a probabilistically complete algorithm, something which to date has not been achieve...
